Only 3 weeks into the tax season, THRHA’s Free Tax Preparation staff have completed over 200 taxes at zero cost to clients. This is already well above the amount of taxes that were prepared last year at this time and there is no slowing down in the foreseeable future. In partnership with Central Council Tlingit Tribes of Alaska-Business and Economic Department (CCTHITA-BEDD), United Way, and local Tribal and City Offices, free tax preparation will be offered to more communities than in previous years. Communities include: Juneau, Angoon, Kake, Saxman, and Prince of Wales Island (Craig, Klawock, Kasaan, Hydaburg, and neighboring Prince of Wales communities). To date the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site has been offered in Juneau and Angoon, we are currently in Kake, and have Saxman, and Prince of Wales VITA sites upcoming.
On average, when taxes are taken to Tax Company’s for processing they cost around $300 to process. That means to date we’ve saved community members $60,000 in tax preparation fees. The goal of the Free Tax Preparation program is to put money back into the pockets of clients and back into the communities. This free service ends April 14th, 2015, make sure not to miss out on this opportunity.
